- Bag of dried chia seeds (I buy in bulk at Costco)
- Almond milk (unsweetened chocolate or vanilla)
- Optional: fruit and nuts (I personally love berries and almonds)
Recently with the help of my sister-in-law, Tamara, I was able to get all “dressed down” in some of my favorite casual fashion and have a photo shoot for my jewelry business. We shot at a local plantation and the combination of southern history and Sweet Tea Jewels made for such a charming day.
When deciding on a location for the shoot, a plantation seemed fitting. One of the perks of living deep in the country is being surrounded by beautiful history. Two miles from my home is a breathtaking farmhouse surrounded by pecan trees. Nothing makes this Southern Belle weak in the knees quite like Southern architecture; I have such a strong connection to the traditional style and dream of owning and remodeling an old home with big white columns someday. Walking and exploring the grounds of the local plantation left me with the vision of rocking on the front porch with Derrek while our children play in the yard. I am so passionate about my work with Sweet Tea Jewels and find myself envisioning my future goals more often since we began our family business.
Having this plantation photo shoot gave me the chance to capture photos of my favorite Sweet Tea Jewels bangles in a setting to which I feel such a connection. One of the reasons I started making jewelry is because of my love of raw gemstones in diverse textures and colors. I am a lover of mixing these two elements to form a story for each piece of jewelry I create. Some of my favorite customer orders are from ladies who tell me to “pick what I think looks good!” At the plantation, I was pulled in by the varying colors and textures all around, the bright green patches of grass, the neutrals in the hanging moss and tree bark. The planks of wood that made the home transitioned seamlessly from smooth to engraved patterns in the trim—I cannot wait to design a few pieces from all of the sensory inspiration I gained that day.
I also transfer this love of colors and patterns to my wardrobe. Finding new ways to style my clothes is most productive after a few minutes (who am I kidding, a few Hours) on Pinterest. It is fun for me to see how many different ways I can style pieces. I tend to buy neutral pieces that I can mix them with my statement pieces to create multiple looks without being repetitive and I try not to over buy clothes each season; maybe my Southern roots are to blame for my conservatism as well! I tend to splurge just as each season begins and then set a certain amount of “fun” purchases each month so I get my shopping fix. There are so many people in this world that do without, it’s unnecessary for me to have a million pieces of clothing to satisfy a want or desire. I have learned to mix pieces to fit my Southern style, that incorporate my dreams and favorite colors and textures while being true to my heart. Once you practice mixing the pieces in your wardrobe, you will not only revamp your outfits but your mind as well.

There are times in life when our bodies and spirits call us to “pump the brakes”, to slow down a little. However, if you are anything like me, you can’t come to a stop. Recently, after a busy morning running errands with my family in Myrtle Beach, I took heed to my feelings about relaxation and reconnection. We decided to recharge our batteries by digging our hands and toes in the sand.
Today was one of those beautiful warmer days and provided the perfect setting for our beach day.
If you have small children and don’t know the wonders of the beach, I hope you can enjoy it vicariously in these next moments and I strongly suggest planning a trip to the coast!
Nolan and Harper had a blast at the beach!
Nolan (in his own words) “ran, ran, ran soooooooooooo fast!” while Harper explored the textures of the sand and seashells.
They both enjoyed the seagulls and Nolan had to make sure he fed them bread “because they hungry mommy!”
Harper kept us smiling as she crawled as fast as she could to try to catch the birds as they continued just out of her reach.
Watching my children exert all of their pent-up energy allowed me to see that they truly needed this outlet for action. A break from being couped up inside, away from the cold weather was just what my family needed.
The ocean had an effect on each of us that day. To know the power of God as we approached the sand. To feel the wind on our faces and hear the waves crashing down reminded us how small we are in God’s vast world!
The time we spent there made all of the work emails, toddler meltdowns and dirty dishes in the sink disappear. We all shared the same peace in our hearts.
This made me realize that if God can create all of this beauty in one day I can’t wait to see what He can do in a life time. I felt the desire to share with you guys an urging to take time out of your busy lives to be present in the moment, to unwind and feel your surroundings with your whole being.
Realizing that a random trip in the middle of the week to the beach isn’t realistic for most people, my advice is to find a place that calms your heart and take some time to disconnect from your troubles. There is beauty all around you, and finding it will humble you greatly.
Everyday, we are exposed to hundreds of toxic chemicals JUST in the products we use on our skin. One of my daily goals is to detoxify my life by using as natural products as I can find. I also think it is important to have a routine and structure in many aspects of life, especially when it comes to your health. I have a specific routine I do every morning to start my day. After testing dozens of natural products, I have found my favorites. The few I use in the mornings are the most important to me because they help me get ready for my entire day.
My little southern life started in 2011 when I met my soulmate. Derrek Scott looked at me with his sparkling blue eyes and pearly whites, and I was instantly a goner. We began a conversation and have been inseparable since.
Nolan loves his “Harper girl,” and never leaves her out of his adventures and snack time. Every day with them is filled with interesting experiences and laughter.
