Over the years, I feel like I have tried everything under the sun when it comes to beauty products. I fondly refer to this journey as “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the Beauty World.” There are SO many products out there that it is so easy to get overwhelmed. I have come to the conclusion that if something works, use it. However, it’s really scary all the chemicals that are packed into beauty products. For this reason, I am very cautious of what I use and I always search for it in the Think Dirty app before I buy anything. This app rates products on how safe they are based on the ingredients in them and tells you what the ingredients are. I strongly suggest you do the same before you buy anything that you are putting on your skin and in your body. I’m sharing my top 10 favorite beauty products with y’all that I do not go without:
1. EVERYDAY PRIMER – Honest Beauty
Heaven in a bottle! This makeup launched last month, and I purchased a monthly bundle when it did. I have used the primer every single day since I purchased it. I wish I could buy this in Costco sizing! You use a pea-sized amount and rub it into your face. It minimizes pores and helps give your foundation a smooth surface to stay on. Before I used it, I would always look at my skin after I put on my makeup and know there was a step I was missing. Primer is that step! The Honest Beauty website lists the ingredients and how they work; “Hyaluronic acid and a botanical peptide help keep skin looking smooth and pores less noticeable. Peony root, a firming active ingredient, adds plumpness to the skin and aloe vera conditions. Infused with orange flower water and mica this face primer delivers a subtle golden glow. Luminous, flawless looking skin in one simple step. Boom!”
2. BROW WAX + DEFINING BRUSH – Eco Brow
I am currently trying to undo years of over plucking and waxing, so a few months ago I was talking to Merlyn, the owner of Shop Conscious Beauty, and told her about my predicament. She immediately guided me towards the Eco Brow Wax in Marilyn, and ever since, I have been in love. I use the defining brush to brush my eyebrow hair into the right direction and the makeup brush end to apply the wax. It helps fill in places that I am working on and keeps the brow hair I have in place so I don’t look like the Grinch!
2. TEA TREE OIL – Young Living
This is such a game-changer for my acne. I use it as a topical spot treatment to help clear up the worst of breakouts. I love using holistic products to replace old products that actually don’t work and are filled with chemicals. I really love that this product can be used so many other ways! You can treat sunburns, skin infections, psoriasis, earaches, and use it as an all-purpose cleaner and lice preventative. To treat breakouts, I just take a drop and apply it directly to the spot. I normally do this before I go to bed and when I wake up, the area has calmed down! Please read this blog post if you are new to oils and want to learn more! I would love to talk to you about them!
3. EXFOLIATING GLOVE – Eco Tan
I have suffered from acne for years, and post-babies, my face is a new ballgame! I feel like I try new products all of the time, but now that I found this hand mitt I don’t. You just wet with water and start scrubbing your face in circles. The mitt exfoliates your skin and cleans all the dirt and grime out of your pores. My face feels like I got a facial after. This is the deepest clean I have ever gotten on my face! I have tried tons of face cleansers and this is the best product I have ever used. You can use it to scrub your entire body if you want and it takes off the layers of dead skin. It can be used for blackheads, pigmentation, cellulite, old tan removal, and ingrown hairs. After you are finished you just rinse with hot water and hang to dry! I wash mine weekly in the washing machine in a normal cycle.
4. LUSTRO OIL #1 – Beautycounter
The most important thing to remember is how you treat your skin, it will treat you back! What I mean is by applying oils like this Lustro oil, I am doing something to work on the parts of my skin I do not like and my overall skincare. I think of this as priming my canvas. I use my Beautycounter Lustro oil #1 to prime my skin and battle dry “angry” patches from the winter weather. I immediately take two drops Lustro Face Oil 1-Calendula and apply it onto my face and neck. During the winter months the weather gives my skin dry and rough patches, and the blend of radiance-boosting oils treats that while doubling as a primer for my makeup. After a month of consistently using Beautycounter products, I can see a dramatic difference in my skin. Brighter, soft, less “angry” skin looks back at me when I look in the mirror. I really like Beautycounter products because they are nontoxic and chemical free. Another one of my favorite things about this company is that most of their products contain coconut oil, which I use for everything (but I will save that conversation for a later post)! I highly suggest you download the “Skin Deep” app and see for yourself what is lurking in your products.
5. BEAUTY BLENDER – Amazon Prime
If you’ve never used one, you have no idea what your makeup is really supposed to look like! The Beauty Blender gives me an airbrushed look when applying my foundation and concealers. The coverage is perfect, not too heavy coverage. I love my Beauty Blender so much; there are numerous ways I use it, and it helps me use less of my products while still achieving the same finished look. My products last longer because of this one simple tool! I clean mine out with warm soapy water after every use and I tend to buy a new one every month. I just get it shipped via Amazon Prime so it comes within two days.
6. NAIL POLISH – Treat
I made the switch from regular nail polish last year before I had Harper. I knew that I would never paint her little toesies with regular nail polishes because of the toxic chemicals in them. I asked my friends over at Shop Conscious Beauty to help lead me in the direction of a non-toxic nail polish, and now I am obsessed with the Treat Collection. I really love this soft color because it’s the perfect neutral! Right now my nails are painted a plum color, and that is available here. I try and switch up the colors every week or so when I know I am going out and about. When I’m at home for long periods of time, I will take the polish off and let my nails breathe and give them a break from the coats of polish. These are a few of my other favorites: Velvet and Sequins, Black Tie, and So Chic.
7. LIP GLOSS – Au Naturale Cosmetics
Something I can hear my mama saying right now is “put on your lips, it will make you feel better!” It’s so true! Taking some color and adding it to my lips can instantly dress up any look. I cannot tell you how many times I don’t feel like applying my makeup so I just throw on some sunnies and lip gloss and head out the door. I love this Au Natural lip gloss line because it’s eco-friendly, long-lasting, and most importantly NOT STICKY! There’s nothing worse than the fall breeze blowing your hair into your freshly applied sticky lip gloss. Yuck!
8. TWEEZERS – Target
I am one of those ladies who is currently trying to undo years of over-plucking, so I use my pair sparingly. I keep a pair with me at all times because everyone knows the best lighting is in the car, and plucking strays is really important for a clean makeup look. If you apply your eye makeup and have random hairs growing in random directions, it takes away from your entire look! Keeping a pair in your car is so perfect because that’s where you always see the strays, and then you get it out of the way while you see it versus trying to remember it for later!
9. BLUSH – Beauty Counter
Finding the right blush for your face is SO important! After I have concealed, it is time to give my face some color. I love the Beautycounter Color Sweep Blush Duo in tawny/whisper. It gives my cheeks the perfect flushed color. I love that I can wear them separately, layer them, or mix them to create a deeper color for my cheeks. I barely tip my blush brush in the pigment and apply to the apples of my cheeks. I also like to take the brush and apply a little above each of my temples and on along my collarbone. Their powders contain Porcelain Flower Extract that helps moisturize your skin and helps the product blend easier.
10. HAIR TOWEL – Shop Conscious Beauty
I have grown my hair to reach my low back. That mixed with how thick my hair is makes me have to spend a long time blow drying my hair when I want to fix it. After I wash it, I need to wrap it up in something that also helps get all of the moisture out that it can. Instead of using a heavy towel, I use this hair turban from Shop Conscious Beauty. I love that it reduces my drying time by 15 minutes… that extra time is crucial for me because I am constantly running late!
